The globally popular Labubu dolls are set to make their big-screen debut, with Pop Mart and Sony Pictures announcing a feature film currently in early development. The project will combine live action and computer-generated animation, marking a major step in expanding the Labubu brand beyond collectibles into mainstream entertainment.

The film will be directed by Paul King, known for acclaimed works such as Paddington and Wonka. While no release date has been confirmed, the announcement signals a significant collaboration aimed at capitalising on the toy’s global popularity, which has turned Pop Mart into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise.

Created over a decade ago by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubu is a distinctive forest elf character inspired by Nordic mythology and part of Lung’s fantasy series The Monsters. The toys have gained a massive following due to their “blind box” concept, where buyers do not know which version they will receive until opening, adding an element of surprise and collectability.

The brand’s popularity has been further amplified by celebrity endorsements, with global figures like Rihanna and Lisa spotted carrying Labubu-themed accessories. This cultural traction has helped Pop Mart expand its footprint, including ventures such as a theme park in Beijing and international exhibitions celebrating the toy’s 10th anniversary.

The film was officially announced during a global exhibition in Paris, where Lung will serve as executive producer. Director Paul King will also co-produce and develop the script alongside Steven Levenson, as the company looks to transform Labubu into a broader entertainment franchise, reflecting the growing trend of blending storytelling with consumer products.
